Haleakalā Summit District
The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park from the entrance to the summit at 10,023 feet is always open with Haleakalā Sunrise Reservations required from 3 am to 7 am HST.

Kīpahulu District
The lush Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park on the Eastside of Maui is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. No reservations are required.

Haleakalā Sunrise
Sunrise reservations allow access to the Summit District from 3 am to 7 am for $1.00 per vehicle. Reservations are available up to 60 days in advance and can only be used for the day specified on the reservation. The reservation fee is not part of the entrance fee. Entrance fees will be collected upon entry to the park. Visitors with National Park Passes, should bring their pass and ID ready to present at the gate for entry. Sunrise reservations can only be obtained online through recreation.gov and must be made prior to visiting the park. For questions about reservations, call the recreation.gov hotline at 1-877-444-6777.

Hiking Trails
Summit District Trails are open year around including Haleakalā Crater hiking trails and wilderness areas. Kīpahulu District trails are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm include: Pīpīwai Trail and Kūloa Point Trail.

Lookouts
The Summit offers a breathtaking view of Haleakalā crater and on clear days, the Big Island. Leleiwi Overlook and Kalahaku Overlook offer more stunning views into Haleakalā crater.

Wilderness Camping
Tent campgrounds in Haleakalā Crater, Hosmer Grove Campground in the Summit District and Kīpahulu Campground are available by reservation only via Recreation.gov.

Wilderness Cabins
Hōlua, Palikū, and Kapalaoa cabins can be reserved up to 6 months in advance via recreation.gov. Find more information about cabins on the Park website.

Stargazing
Visitors can enjoy pristine dark skies from the summit. Due to its high elevation, the atmosphere is often clearer and light pollution is minimal, allowing for ideal viewing conditions.

Birdwatching
Planted in 1909, Hosmer Grove and the adjacent nature trail though sub-alpine shrubland provides an excellent venue to sign Hawai‘i’s colorful native forest birds.

Make a Reservation
Sunrise reservations are required at the Summit District from 3 am to 7 am. Reservations can be made online up to 60 days in advance and are only valid for the day reserved. These tickets are released at 7 am HST. Some last minute reservations for any given day will be released 2 days (48 hours) in advance.

Stay hydrated & Dress the Part
Temperatures at the summit are much lower than down at the beach. You will be cold in beach wear, towels, and short sleeves. Wear warm layers, bring sunscreen, and stay hydrated. Weather conditions change quickly and without warning so be prepared for anything!

Have a Plan
Gas up or charge your car before coming to the park. Start all hikes early to give yourself ample time to finish before dark or District closure (for Kīpahulu). If you want to hike the 11-mile half loop at the summit from Keoneheʻeheʻe (Sliding Sands) Trailhead to the Halemauʻu Trailhead, you will need to make arrangements for a pick-up or have two cars.

Stay sharp
The Kīpahulu District is currently open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. The Summit District is always open. Reservations are required for sunrise but are not required for sunset or night sky viewing.
